Foreland MCZ

Site Overview

Foreland MCZ was designated in May 2019 and is located in the Southern North Sea and English Channel, extending along the mid-channel between Kent and France. The site covers an area of 244km with only a very small section lying within the Kent and Essex IFCA district. A large proportion of the seabed within the site consists of sand or coarse sediment which provides habitat for benthic species such as burrowing anemones, bivalves, worms and bottom dwelling fish. Deep rock habitats dominated by animal communities are also situated within Foreland MCZ. A colourful array of sponges, cup corals, anemones and sea squirts adorn the rock faces whilst commercially valuable crustaceans shelter within rock crevices.
